치밀한 내면에의 몰두로 자신만의 구성적인 조형 언어를 획득한 김경두의 첫 개인전 《속단하지 않는 세계》는 그가 0.3mm 샤프 펜슬 또는 볼펜 한 자루에 의지해 종이를 횡단해 온 여정을 조명한다. 투박하게 뜯어낸 달력의 뒷면, 인쇄 공장에서 얻은 파지는 작가가 정교하게 직조한 기계 군단이 빼곡하게 들어서는 순간, 하나의 가상세계가 드리우는 작품으로 탈바꿈한다. 작가는 전선이 얽힌 전봇대로부터 영감을 얻어 로봇의 뼈대를 여러 선이 접하는 방식으로 시각화하는데, 특유의 대칭적이고 밀도 높은 묘사는 하나의 건축물, 더 나아가 중세 성당의 평면도를 연상시키는 황홀망을 불러 일으킨다.
김경두는 자신이 고안한 세계 속 존재들을 굽어볼 때, 각 개체들이 자주적으로 행동할 수 있는 자아를 가졌음을 상정한다. 그는 2021년 창작그룹 ‘밝은방’과의 인터뷰에서 기계 장치들의 세계에 대해 “어떤 것도 속단할 수 없다”*고 말한 바 있다. 그의 세상을 이루는 모든 요소들은 인과를 예측할 수 없는 변칙적인 세상이다. 작가가 창조한 세계임에도, 그가 생명력을 불어넣었다는 선언조차 허하지 않는다. 그저 모든 존재들이 그들의 공동체 속에서 현존하게 놔둘 뿐이다.
움베르토 에코(Umberto Eco)가 그의 저서 「열린 예술작품(Opera Aperta)」에서 ‘열린 작품들’ 역시 해석자가 무엇이든 할 수 있는 권한을 주지는 않는다고 말한 것을 복기한다. 타자를 향한 시선이 너무 쉽게 개인의 정체성을 복속하는 사회에서, 김경두가 한 세계를 대할 때 어느 것도 쉽게 예단하지 않는 태도는 우리 사회에 경종을 울린다. 작가 자신에게도 ‘열린 작품’으로 남아 있는 그 세상은 모든 조건과 경계를 뛰어넘는 가능성과 무한한 상상력을 위한 공간이다. 누구도 함부로 짐작하지 않고, 또 재단 받지 않을 가능성을 위해 열려 있다. 지금도 작가의 방에는 그러한 가능성을 구현하는 종이들이 하나씩 차곡차곡 쌓여가고 있다.

Gallery Versi is pleased to present The Non-Judgmental World, the first solo exhibition by Kim Kyung Du, on view from September 9 through December 31, 2025.
Kim’s practice began with the simplest of gestures: drawing with the fine point of a mechanical pencil or a single ballpoint pen on the reverse sides of tear-off calendars and other discarded sheets of paper. These modest, everyday surfaces become sites for the artist’s intricate and densely rendered worlds—populated by what he calls machine-beings. Emerging through webs of intersecting lines inspired by telephone wires and electrical circuits, these figures assume symmetrical, geometric forms that evoke both architectural schemata and the meditative precision of cathedral floor plans.
Through repetition, symmetry, and obsessive linear construction, Kim’s drawings reveal a universe in which mechanical and organic logics intertwine. His compositions suggest not only the anatomy of imagined beings but also the possibility of systems beyond human judgment—spaces where order and chaos coexist without hierarchy or conclusion.
Central to Kim’s artistic philosophy is his conviction that “nothing can be easily judged.” Living with neurodiversity, he constructs a visual language that resists binary thinking and embraces multiplicity. Each sheet of paper becomes an “open work,” in which meaning remains fluid and indeterminate, inviting viewers into a shared process of perception rather than dictating interpretation. In this sense, The Non-Judgmental World is less a collection of drawings than an ongoing meditation on possibility—an insistence that art, like life, can exist beyond the limits of categorization.
Even now, Kim’s studio continues to fill with these meticulously drawn pages—quiet constellations of thought and time. Together, they form a world that affirms the dignity of openness, a space where judgment dissolves, and imagination endures.
