김용원 작가는 제6회와 제7회 벗이미술제에서 연이어 입선을 수상하며, 2024년부터 벗이미술관의 소속 작가로 활동하고 있다. 작가는 그의 기억 속에 남아있는 동물의 이미지를 작가 특유의 상상력을 더하여 새로운 형태로 재창조한다.

작가가 동물원에서 또 매체를 통해 직간접적으로 만나온 동물들은 그의 캔버스에서 이미지가 분할되고, 확대되며 다시 축소되는 과정을 거쳐 자유롭게 표현된다. 작가는 주로 화면을 가득 채우는 독특하고도 대담한 구도를 사용하는데, 이와 더불어 강렬하고 대비되는 색채는 그의 작품에 생동감을 불어넣고, 정제되지 않은 자유분방한 붓질은 그의 개성과 자유로운 성격을 그대로 반영한다.

이러한 요소들을 통해 김용원의 동물은 그저 본 것을 그리는 것을 넘어서, 그 속에 담긴 작가의 기억과 감정을 시각적으로 풀어낸 결과물이다. 단순한 재현에 그치지 않고, 작가의 기억과 상상력의 조화로 재탄생한 김용원의 동물들은 관람객에게 새로운 시각적 경험을 선사하며, 동물이라는 주제 안에서 인간의 기억과 감정을 탐구하고, 작가의 감정과 시선을 함께 느끼게 한다.

Yongwon Kim was consecutively selected as a finalist at the 6th and 7th Versi Art Festivals, and since 2024, he has been actively working as an affiliated artist at Art Museum Versi. His artistic practice involves reimagining animals—retained as fragments of memory—through his distinctive imagination, reconstructing them into entirely new forms.

The animals that Kim has encountered either directly in zoos or indirectly through various media undergo a process of fragmentation, magnification, and reduction on his canvas, resulting in freely expressed forms. He often employs bold and unconventional compositions that fill the entire surface of the canvas. Vivid, contrasting colors breathe life into his works, while unrestrained and raw brushstrokes convey his personality and uninhibited artistic character.

Through these elements, the animals in Kim’s work go beyond mere depictions of what he has seen—they are visual manifestations of his memories and emotions. Rather than simple reproductions, the animals are reborn through a harmonious blend of recollection and imagination. This offers viewers a new visual experience that explores human memory and emotion within the theme of animals, allowing them to engage with the artist’s emotional lens and perspective.
