우리의 인식은 아주 미세한 감각의 전환에서 비롯된다. 마치 발밑에서 토끼 굴이 열려 익숙한 질서가 흔들릴 때, 우리는 이전과는 다른 방식으로 세계를 바라보게 된다. 벗이미술관의 2026년 1분기 기획전 《Enigmatic Senses : 낯선 감각의 세계에서》는 자폐 스펙트럼 장애(Autism Spectrum Disorder)를 지닌 일곱 명의 작가가 각자의 고유한 감각 경험을 토대로 직조한 시각적 세계를 펼쳐 보인다. 여기서 ‘낯선 감각의 세계’는 비일상의 환상의 공간을 의미하는 것이 아니라, 인식의 층위가 전환되는 지점, 즉 세계 이해의 방식이 다층적으로 열리는 사유의 장을 지칭한다.
일곱 명의 작가가 제시하는 감각적 장면들은 서로 다른 구조적 질서를 지닌다. 전통적 도상을 현대적 색채로 재해석하는 회화적 실험, 반복적 선의 축적을 통해 시간의 흐름을 가시화하는 작업, 자연의 패턴과 내면적 정서를 긴밀히 연결하는 구성 방식, 도시와 기계의 구조를 분석적으로 분해하는 접근 등이 그것이다. 또한 생명을 가진 형상을 색과 패턴으로 확장하거나, 복잡한 도식 속에서 작가의 기억과 질서를 탐색하는 작업은 개별적 인지 경험이 시각적 방식으로 구조화되는 과정을 보여준다.

Our perception often begins with the slightest shift in sensation. When familiarity unsettles, like a hidden rabbit hole opening beneath our feet, we begin to see the world in entirely new ways. Enigmatic Senses: Within a World of Unfamiliarity, art museum VERSI’s first exhibition of 2026, presents the visual world of seven artists on the autism spectrum, each shaped by their own distinct sensory experiences. Here, “unfamiliar perception” does not refer to a fantastical or unreal space, but rather to moments when layers of perception shift and new ways of understanding the world unfold.
Each artist offers a unique sensory structure. Their works range from painterly experiments that reinterpret traditional imagery through contemporary color, to accumulations of repetitive lines that render the passage of time visible. Some connect natural patterns with inner emotional states, while others analytically deconstruct the structures of cities and machines. Across these approaches, individual cognitive experiences are translated into carefully organized visual forms.
Their works do not rely on conventional formats or accepted principles. Instead, the rhythms and flows each artist has cultivated over time become the core principles of their practice. As a result, the exhibition space transforms into a site where multiple sensory frequencies intersect and resonate. Through these encounters, viewers are invited to move beyond visual appreciation and reconsider how they perceive and interpret the world itself.
With this exhibition, art museum VERSI seeks to reexamine prevailing perspectives on disability and art, as well as norms and expression. The sensory languages developed by the artists expand our understanding of what art can address and how it can exist. For visitors, the experience offers a new way of responding to difference – one that acknowledges the plurality of perception. Perhaps, in the end, we come to realize that the world is never read through a single lens alone.
