차동엽은 아트브룻(Art Brut) 작가로서의 경력을 시작하며, 벗이미술관에서 개최된 제7회 벗이미술제를 비롯한 여러 드로잉 공모전에서 수상한 바 있다. 그는 다채로운 색상의 마커 펜을 활용하여 생동감 넘치는 도시 장면을 밀도 높게 구성하며, 도심의 에너지를 생생히 전달하는 동시에 도시 생활의 매력과 역동성을 탐구한다. 그의 작품은 마치 맨눈으로 포착한 듯 빠르게 흐르는 도시의 리듬을 종이에 옮겨 놓는다. 서울과 그의 고향 대전을 포함하여 작가가 감정적으로 연결되어 있는 다양한 도시 풍경은 그의 작업 속에서 점점 더 활력 넘치고 역동적으로 표현된다.

그는 버스, 기차 등 대중교통 수단에 매료되어 일상에서 관찰한 다양한 차량을 그리기 시작했으며, 이후 이를 계기로 도시 풍경 전반을 포괄하는 작업으로 확장시켰다. 특히 문명의 진보를 상징하는 두껍고 각지고 직선적인 형태의 교통수단은 그 배경에 펼쳐지는 계절의 풍경에 의해 시각적으로 부드러워지며, 이 균형은 특별한 조화를 만들어내어 관람객을 생동하는 일상의 순간 속으로 초대한다. 한편, 그의 일부 작품은 타인과의 의미 있는 소통에 대한 깊은 애정을 반영하기도 한다. 이들 회화는 정렬된 인물 군상, 다양한 학생 집단, 그리고 일상에 몰두하는 개인들로 가득하다. 그가 섬세하고도 다채롭게 묘사한 문화적 풍경은 외부 세계와 작가 자신을 이어주는 일종의 다리 역할을 한다. 그의 작품에 묘사된 밀집된 인물들은, 다시 말해, 자신이 속한 세계 속에서 따뜻하고 열린 방식으로 소통하고자 하는 그의 진심 어린 태도를 여실히 보여준다.

Cha Dong Yub commenced his career as an Art Brut artist by winning multiple drawing contests including the 7th Versi Art Competition held at Art Museum Versi. He creates vibrant, densely populated urban scenes using an array of colored marker pens. His works vividly convey the energy of the city center while exploring the allure and dynamism of urban life. The fast-paced rhythm of the city is captured on paper as if photographed by his naked eye. Urban landscapes of various places to which the artist feels emotionally connected, including Seoul and his hometown, Daejeon, become increasingly vigorous and dynamic in his creations.

Fascinated by public transportation, such as buses and trains, he began drawing various vehicles observed in his daily life, gradually expanding this focus into his broader depictions of cityscapes. Particularly, these modes of transportation—often portrayed as thick, angular, and linear forms symbolizing the progress of civilization—are visually softened by the seasonal landscapes behind them. This balance creates a remarkable sense of harmony, inviting viewers into lively moments of everyday life.

Meanwhile, some of his works may reflect his deep fondness for engaging in meaningful communication with others. These paintings are full of aligned figures, diverse groups of students, and individuals concentrating on their daily lives. The cultural landscapes he has intricately and colorfully rendered serve as sort of bridges between the external world and the artist himself. The density of people depicted in his works reveals, in other words, how sincerely prepared he is to communicate warmly and openly within the world he inhabits.
